Located on West Kunderang, a privately owned cattle property, along the riverine escarpment, between Armidale and Kempsey, north-eastern NSW. The Retreat is totally surrounded by the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, World Heritage listed for its Dry Rainforest Ecosystems and Rugged Gorge Vistas, and offers access to the pristine waters of the Macleay River, with a myriad of recreational activities and relaxing interludes! Our location at West Kunderang indeed reflects our unique position in that we have similar natural values as the Wilderness and heritage listed areas, differing in that we manage conventional vehicular access to our property allowing outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy a greater range of activities in this spectacular gorge country. We would like to think our visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds!! Limited camping accommodation is available.
Our accommodation facilities include ten separate campsites spread along the Macleay river. Each campsite is
private and self-contained for your comfort.
You will find an abundance of recreational activities to enjoy at West Kunderang - including fishing, 4W-driving, canoeing and bushwalking.
Day visitors are also welcome to come and enjoy the activities, view the incredible countryside, use picnic tables and amenities, and view the spectacular sights on offer.
Fishing is addictive in the Macleay River, where you can expect to catch Australian Bass, Mullet, Herring and Catfish.
Half or full-day paddles on the Macleay and Aspley Rivers are a wonderful way of viewing the spectacular gorge country of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.
Bushwalking and hiking are popular activities here at West Kunderang, especially in the adjacent National Park and along the Macleay River flats.
There are a number of 4W-driving tracks ideal for venturing out for a few days from our base at West Kunderang.
In addition to the myriad of recreational activities, it is a great opportunity to have some much-needed rest and relaxation time with your loved ones. Many of our inter-generational families have been visiting us here for decades; grandparents, their children and then their little ones. Long family lines have been coming to these camping grounds to share their love of the outdoors and experience nature at it’s best.
Whether you’re after a quiet fishing trip with the boys or a 4-wheel driving experience through the wilderness, a couple’s weekend away canoeing and hiking or just getting away for a break from the hectic city life, this is a wonderful place to chill out, take in the fresh air and watch the native wildlife in their natural habitats.
