About West Kunderang Recreational Retreat

Our Location

The West Kunderang Recreational Retreat is located on a cattle property historically owned by the McRae Family, with the traditions now carried on by Cindy McRae. The Retreat can only be accessed via Raspberry Road, along the riverine escarpment, between Armidale and Kempsey, north-eastern NSW.

Totally surrounded by the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, World Heritage listed for its Dry Rainforest Ecosystems and Rugged Gorge Vistas, the retreat offers access to the pristine waters of the Macleay River, with a myriad of recreational activities and relaxing interludes! Limited camping accommodation is available.

Visitor Guidelines

Download a copy of the visitor guidelines brochure here.

The Visitor Guidelines page outlines important issues relating to the locked gate access, and driving in and around “West Kunderang”. Bookings are essential and gate code access is organised the day before you enter “West Kunderang”, when we also discuss estimated time of arrival, road & weather conditions, and current river-levels.

Considerations in the use of our campsites are also highlighted in the visitor guidelines, as are the limitations of some activities (eg: fishing, motorbike riding, & 4wd river-crossings).

At the West Kunderang Recreational Retreat we strive to provide new facilities and improve on existing ones. In the recent past, we have managed to complete some long awaited building projects: installing new poly tanks at each campsite, providing fresh on-site drinking water for our visitors. As yet we have no fixed shower facilities for campers, and we suggest campers provide their own solar shower & surround.

Our location at West Kunderang indeed reflects our unique position in that we have similar natural values as the Wilderness and heritage-listed areas, differing in that we manage conventional vehicular access to our property allowing outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy a greater range of activities in this spectacular gorge country. We would like to think our visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds!!
