Bushwalking, Hiking & Birdwatching

The open river flats and shallow gravel races of the Macleay River environs makes excellent conditions for bushwalking and hiking on “West Kunderang”, and in the adjacent National Park.

On a more localised level, we maintain a short walk (of approximately 40 minutes return duration) into the Heritage listed Dry Rainforest. This walk is great for families as there is a huge Fig Tree to see at the end.

Birdwatchers will also find this walk inspiring as it is home to the very vocal yellow-faced honeyeater (pictured), as well as many other birds native to dry rainforest. The Bellbird Walk to the Fig Tree starts at the northern end of the “Sliprails Campsite”(highlighted on campsite map located on this page – click on map to enlarge).

The Bluff

A 45 min walk across the 1st river crossing below the Riverflat Campsite, continue along track through man-gate beside locked farm gate. Approximately 400m further along track, follow sign to Bluff Lookout turning right. Follow track up a short rise, continue along track onto bluff for great views of “West Kunderang” camping sites and views up-river (highlighted on campsite map located on this page – click on map to enlarge). Allow 1 1/2 hours for round-trip.

For a longer hike there is an optional walk to the historic grave of GB Waller, located opposite the mouth of Kunderang Brook (approx.10kms each way). This grave is not signposted – so please ask for directions before leaving the “West Kunderang” camp grounds.
