Bookings are essential and gate code access is organised the day before you enter West Kunderang, when we also discuss estimated time of arrival, road & weather conditions, and current river-levels.
Vehicular Access from Armidale or Kempsey is via the unsealed Kempsey and Raspberry Forestry Roads. The last 4km into the West Kunderang Recreational Retreat is a steep cutting, with sharp corners and deep dish drains,
suitable for 4WDs towing 16ft conventional or 18ft offroad caravans only.
Access Via Armidale or Grafton/Coffs Harbour, via Ebor
VIA ARMIDALE: Take the Grafton Road (Waterfall Way) east of Armidale for approximately forty kilometres, bypassing Wollomombi. Continue across the Chandler River Bridge and turn immediately right onto the Kempsey Road.
VIA EBOR: if you are coming from the north via Grafton you will turn left onto
Waterfall Way after leaving
Ebor
and turn left onto the
Kempsey Road immediately before the Chandler River Bridge.
Continue east 20 kilometres along
Kempsey Road crossing the
Styx River Bridge until you reach
Raspberry Road turnoff on the right.
Raspberry Road to WEST KUNDERANG
Take this turnoff and continue along Raspberry Road for approximately 34 kilometres until you reach the East Kunderang / West Kunderang junction. (Do not be tempted to veer off on any roads before this junction.) Take the right hand fork to West Kunderang. Keep going for 2.5 kilometres until you reach the locked gate. Please leave the gate as you find it. After proceeding through the gate, engage appropriate low gear and continue down cutting for approximately 6 kilometres.
Go through two gates and follow the road to your designated camping site.
Continue on to enjoy your stay!
Non-vehicular recreational users (ie. hikers, canoeists) should register your itinerary, emergency evacuation procedures and next of kin details, along with payment of camping fees (if applicable) before entering West Kunderang. The collection of a
Satellite phone key is encouraged in case of an emergency.
Our location at West Kunderang indeed reflects our unique position in that we have similar natural values as the Wilderness and heritage-listed areas, differing in that we manage conventional vehicular access to our property allowing outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy a greater range of activities in this spectacular gorge country. We would like to think our visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds!!
